Hand wooden block printing is an ancient textile tradition that originated in Northern India. It involves stamping designs onto fabric by hand using intricately carved wooden blocks. Manufacture of wooden blocks is a laborious process and requires tremendous skill and team work. The process involves creating intricate designs by hand and then carving them on wooden blocks. The printers then use the carved wooden blocks, dip them in pigment colors to get desired colors and stamp them onto the fabric. As many as ten different wooden blocks are used to complete one saree.
